Turtle in Paradise by Jennifer L. Holm February 8, 2011

One of my favorite books is Penny from Heaven.  This book is by the same author.  They are similar in that each one has a spunky girl as the main character.  Also, both books are historical fiction.  Penny from Heaven takes place during the 1950’s, while Turtle in Paradise is set during the 1930’s.

In this book, Turtle is sent to live with her aunt and three male cousins who live in the Florida Keys.  Her mother is a housekeeper who gets a job working for a lady who doesn’t like kids.  Turtle’s boy cousins and their friends call themselves the Diaper Gang.  They pull around a wagon and take care of the neighbors’ babies while thinking up all sorts of mischief.  The Gang reminded me of the Little Rascals, a TV show I watched when I was young.  They are funny, daring, and don’t like girls.  Turtle is smart, though.  She knows how to capture their attention.  She even gets them involved in a hunt for pirate’s treature.  This book is filled with humor, adventure, and heartbreak.  I absolutely loved it!
