Dear [local News Media]:

I hope this email finds you well and looking forward to nicer weather.

I am writing to tell you about an exciting event in the works for Mayfield Middle School. Affectionately known as our “Haircut Showdown”, the Beautiful Lengths (BL) project will take place at the school on April 26, 2012 in the afternoon, from about 12:45-3:00.  This is a great event that supports a wonderful cause.

I started this program four years ago because, basically, I was tired of kids’ sloppy hair after a long winter.  So I challenged our team of students to a teacher vs. student type game tied to my social studies content—if I won, I got to shave their heads.  If I lost, I had to shave my head bald and remove all facial hair.  Well, I won, and to make a long story short, the whole bald thing gave me the idea to turn it into an event to benefit those who have no choice to go bald, even though it makes them very uncomfortable—women and girls undergoing cancer treatments (this cause is near and dear as I lost my mother to cancer).

We get a large group of students together in the gym and give them hair cuts in a show of solidarity with those battling cancer.  Each student in attendance, whether they get a cut or not, usually makes a cash donation to Beautiful Lengths, an organization which furnishes high-quality wigs to these suffering girls and women. Boys get their heads shaved with a 1 or 2 attachment, and girls get their ponytails snipped. We donate the hair AND the money to BL.

Any boy with hair longer than 6” gets it put into ponytails and cut before shaving (it’s hilarious) … the company can use the shorter hair for bangs. I generally make the ceremonial first cut, and then the stylist-mom who heads a team of professionals takes over.

Normally we have about 40 kids, but we have opened it up to the whole grade level this year (7th grade), so we expect 120-150 students will allow us to cut their hair.  It is a great time—music playing, hair flying, Mohawks shaved down to nothingness … there is excitement in the air, and the kids feel really good about doing something positive (see attached photos!).

This years’ event is dedicated to MMS teacher, David Bright, who is currently battling throat cancer.  In honor of this, we will be gifting periwinkle blue t-shirts (the color that represents the fight against this type of cancer) to those allowing us to cut their hair.  Our corporate sponsors at this time include Hillcrest Hospital, Fantasy Candies, and Michael Christopher Salons. We have been so impressed with the outpouring of support, and we know this year’s event is going to be the best yet.

We would love to have you get involved by covering this special event.  If this sounds like something you would be interested in doing, please call or email me, and we can discuss options.

Thanks in advance for your consideration and support!

Persuasive Speeches April 11, 2011

I just want to recognize all of the effort your classes are putting into these persuasive speeches. It is so cool to see all of you forming opinons, changing sides, and finding facts to justify some very strong feelings about these topics.

I can’t wait to hear them all next week!
